RESIGNATION OF THE BISHOP OF MELBOURNE

The Right Rev. Dr. Charles Perry has intimated to the authorities at home his desire to resign the Bishopric of Melbourne, to which he was consecrated in 1847.

The episcopal jurisdiction attached to the see extends over the whole of the province of Victoria, consisting of 80,000 square miles, with a population of 540,322 and 108 clergy. The income of the see is £1,333 6s. 8d., of which £1,000 is an allowance from the colonial treasury, the remainder, £333 6s. 8d., being paid by the trustees of the Colonial Bishopric Fund.

Dr. Perry is brother-in-law of Archdeacon Cooper, Vicar of Kendal. The bishopric thus about to become vacant has been offered by Her Majesty's Government to the Rev. Charles Edward Oakley, M.A., B.C.L., rector of the metropolitan parish of St. Paul's, Covent Garden.
